All Epiphone models sold in the United States are subjected to a 15 point inspection process, and are “set up” in the USA by trained Gibson employees at their Nashville facility. Around , Les Paul, a legendary musician and musical electronics and solidbody guitar pioneer, created one of his early solid bodied guitars after-hours in the Epiphone factory out of a 4X4″ piece of wood.
On to this he later attached side “wings” from a Epiphone hollowbody guitar in order to give it a more conventional look. This guitar, known as “The Log”, was later shown to Gibson executives, who initially passed on the idea of building them, but they changed their mind within a couple of years and the Les Paul Model guitar as we know it today was first released in These early “gold top” models were later joined by the black Les Paul Customs, and then the sunburst “Standards” of the late s.
Several Epiphone Les Paul models are very close to the classic Gibson models upon which they are based, while other models are designed with different features to keep the entry price low for students and budget-minded players.

Note the ugly green wear that the all gold models get on the back of the neck. Because of this, many collectors avoid “all gold” Les Pauls. Also note the “trapeze” tailpiece used on and early Les Pauls. The and early goldtop models are fairly useless as a player because of a shallow neckset, and a badly designed trapeze tailpiece they have some collector appeal though, as Gibson’s first Les Paul generation.
The trapeze tailpiece had two problems: The second problem was if the trapeze was knocked from the side, the whole guitar could go out of tune. The neck angle is also very shallow on the trapeze models, so the strings could not be looped over the top of the LP tailpiece. Also converting to a style stop-bar or a tunematic was often impossible again because of the neck angle. Because of the funky Les Paul tailpiece on and early models, these version of the Les Paul Standard is generally looked down on by players.
The early wrap-around models still had a shallow neck angle, limiting the downward adjustment of the stop bar. But as approached, the neck angle increased allowing more adjustment. By fall , the tuneamatic bridge and stop tailpiece was adopted solving the intonation complaint , making the Les Paul Goldtop a big winner. Hence the late to early Les Paul Standard Goldtop is regarded as a very usable and versatile guitar.
In early , Gibson changed from P single coil pickups to their new humbucking pickups, making the Les Paul Standard what it is today one of the most popular electric guitars of all time.

Neck wood The majority of although by no means all Les Pauls have a neck that is cut from a single billet of mahogany. The neck is all one piece of wood. The problem for the fakers is that making necks this way is a very wasteful practice. Above, you can see that the fake Les Paul on the left has had its angled headstock scarfed on. The joint between the two different pieces of wood is obvious. One thing to note which confuses things very slightly is that genuine Gibsons usually have the left and right edges of the headstock glued on from a separate piece of timber you can just see this in the image on the right.

Due to budgetary constraints I was coming around the the idea of an Epiphone actually and was fortunate in that PMT unfortunate name I think! I took them both off to the practice room really loved the looks of the Epiphone which was very ‘classic’ LP. I wasn’t sure about the looks of the faded cherry studio but it certainly sounded great and played very well.
The fretboard was better finished on the Gibson and it just sounded more open and clear. When you strummed a chord you could sort of hear each string more clearly whereas on the Epiphone the seperate sounds sort of merged into one. The Epi was heavier because the Gibson is weight relieved. I was really struggling to make a decision because the Epiphone looked better and the Gibson sounded better.
I was also aware that the chances are if I bought the Epi in another couple of years I would eventually want to move up to the real thing whereas if I bought the Gibson it was potentially a guitar for life. I wandered back out to look at the wall of guitars and decided to find out what other colours the Gibson faded came in and it turned out that matt black was an option.
I’d never contemplated a black guitar before but it actually looked very cool and sleek and I rather liked it. I took that one off to the practice room and really enjoyed playing it. By now I was running out of time because my daughter needed picking up from her drama class. My wife who was with me expressed the view that the Gibson sounded better and I should buy the real thing anyway rather than buggering about with something that wasn’t quite the real deal!!
Unfortunately I noticed that the black demo LP had a minor ding on the back of it.
