Search Engine Optimization cannot be defined in one sentence or word. It consists of number of processes such as keyword research, On-page, Off-page, Canonicalization, Directory submission, Article writing & submission, Blog writing & submission, Social Bookmarking, Social Media Optimization, Link Building, & many more.

So basically there is no answer for your question in one line or sentence. IMO you should signup for different SEO forums & try you tube videos for learning SEO techniques.

    Best to You

Search Engine Optimization is basically for optimizing the website with the keywords related to your products & services.

There are two main steps in optimization i.e. On-Page Optimization & Off-Page Optimization

On-Page Optimization: Analyze your website for keywords related to your products & services, & then optimized it with the title, meta description & keywords tags.

Off-Page Optimization: It is basically for collecting quality backlinks for your website. You can collect quality backlinks with the help of directory, article, social bookmarking submission. You can also join social networking sites, forum & blogs for promoting your site.

You can know more about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on Google, Yahoo etc….

A good question and many books have been written about this subject. There are two types online and offline
Online is basically making sure that your webpage or blog is properly optimised and user friendly to the various search engines such as Yahoo and Google. Using something like wordpress for this with an SEO plugin guarantees that happens and as wordpress and the plugins are free then that is the way I would recommend.

Offline SEO comes in many forms but consists of backlinking to your website. The search engines love back linking and I should warn you that is a long and slow process. It can be done by writing articles and submitting to the various article directories, by posting comments on blogs and forums and through social bookmarking on digg, delicious etc.

Very time consuming but worth it. The best way I find is to use free websites who have already done this.

SEO or search engine optimization is a very refined technology that one has to learn before venturing to do SEO. To do SEO properly one must have proper knowledge of HTML with atleast one server side scripting language like ASP or PHP. Then you can take up and online course in SEO. thousands of them are freely available and you do not have to waste your money on costly SEO packages. Learn the basics then implement them you will improve this way the best. There are also softwares that walk you step by step if you know little to nothing about SEO. For example, an automated software would create SEO tasks for you to do and would provide easy-to-follow instructions. If you have a small SEO budget and don’t want to hire an expensive firm, this might be a viable option.
